The dairy supply chain in India witnesses a large variation in terms of size, distribution, the degree of licensing, quality and long-term performance.
Some of the factors that affect the value chain of supply are described below:
-Farmers tend to be limited in terms of their ability to render effective services. The deprivation from enough finance and advanced technical expertise has severely affected the quality and quantity of services they can offer.
-More than 80% of total milk is produced by small-scale suppliers. Such milk mostly comes from crossbreed animals raised on open and semi-zero grazing systems. They sell milk directly to consumers or through local traders and thus encounter access issues such as obtaining feed, fodder, and water.
-Informal milk traders control 70% of marketed milk
-Low quality and milk safety act as a considerable limitation. The lack of reliable quality testing and unhygienic equipment used for transportation of the milk does not meet the minimum food safety standards set by industry regulators.
